What the bond actually guarantees
A mechanical contractor bond is a code-compliance guarantee to Memphis and Shelby County. When you register to install and service HVAC and mechanical systems, the county wants a financial backstop that you'll work to the adopted mechanical code and follow county licensing rules.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and Memphis / Shelby County (the obligee), with property owners and the public protected. If you violate the mechanical code or licensing rules and someone is harmed, they can recover against the bond.
