About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Gaithersburg licenses electricians under City Code Chapter 7 and conditions a master electrician's or master electrician (limited) license on a $1,000 surety bond — a compliance guarantee that the licensee performs electrical work in accordance with the chapter and indemnifies anyone harmed by a failure to do so.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Gaithersburg (the obligee). If a licensed electrician's work causes harm through a violation of the chapter, the harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Gaithersburg lets you skip the bond entirely if you already hold a current master or master-limited electrician's license from the State of Maryland or another Maryland jurisdiction and can show the City proof of it; the bond (or proof of $300,000 general liability / $100,000 property damage insurance) is required only while you rely on a City-issued license without that proof.

Gaithersburg City Code § 7-7Gaithersburg City Code § 7-7 requires every electrician to file a bond in the sum of $1,000, or proof of insurance with a minimum of $300,000 general liability and $100,000 property damage coverage, conditioned on performing all electrical work in accordance with Chapter 7 and indemnifying anyone harmed by a failure to do so. A new bond is required every two years, matching the license term set by § 7-5. Section 7-7 exempts an electrician licensed as a master electrician or master electrician (limited) by the State of Maryland or another Maryland licensing jurisdiction, while that license is in effect and proof is provided to the City.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Gaithersburg electrician bond?Premiums cost 0.5% of the $1,000 bond amount, $100 minimum — set by the City under Chapter 7. Your exact price appears at the short application.
Do I pay the $1,000?No. You pay your quoted premium, starting at $100. The $1,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond?Small fixed-amount license bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information. Most applications approve instantly; if a check ever runs, it's a soft pull that won't affect your score.
Do I need this bond if I already have a Maryland state electrician license? Not always. Gaithersburg exempts an electrician already licensed as a master electrician or master electrician (limited) by the State of Maryland or another Maryland jurisdiction, as long as you show the City proof of that license. The bond applies while you rely on a City-issued license without that proof, and a new one is required every 2 years.
