About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Iowa licenses private investigative agencies, private security agencies, and bail enforcement agencies through the Department of Public Safety under Iowa Code chapter 80A. Section 80A.10 conditions the license on a $5,000 surety bond, filed on state form PD6.

The bond is conditioned on the faithful, lawful, and honest conduct of the agency and its employees in carrying on the business. It is a three-party arrangement — you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Iowa (the obligee), with your clients as the protected parties.

If a business carries more than one of these license types (investigation, security, or bail enforcement), the statute requires a $10,000 bond instead. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety; it is a guarantee, not insurance for you. Tell us which licenses you hold and we issue the matching amount.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Iowa private investigator bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. Three percent of the fixed $5,000 bond amount is only $150, which is below our $275 floor, so every agency pays the same $275. The $5,000 is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What if I hold more than one license type? +
If your business carries more than one of the three license types under chapter 80A — private investigation, private security, or bail enforcement — Iowa requires a $10,000 bond instead of $5,000. Tell us which licenses you hold and we issue the matching amount.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
