About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Iowa regulates travel agencies / sellers of travel under Iowa Code chapter 9D, administered through the Secretary of State. The bond is a consumer-protection guarantee for the benefit of Iowa residents, standing behind the money a customer pays for travel that the agency arranges.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Iowa (the obligee), with your customers as the protected parties. If an agency fails to deliver paid-for travel or commits a fraudulent act, a harmed customer can recover against the bond.

One important note: Iowa repealed the separate seller-of-travel license effective July 1, 2020, but a travel agency doing business in Iowa still registers with the Secretary of State, and a $10,000 bond is commonly required as part of that registration. Confirm your current requirement with the Secretary of State — and we issue the $10,000 bond if you need it.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Iowa travel agency bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every agency. The $10,000 is the standard amount, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Didn’t Iowa repeal the travel license? +
Iowa repealed the separate seller-of-travel license effective July 1, 2020. A travel agency doing business in Iowa still registers with the Secretary of State, and a $10,000 bond is commonly required as part of that registration. Confirm your current requirement with the Secretary of State; if a bond is needed, we issue it.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Fixed-amount bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your registration never lapses over a missed email.
