IA pharmacy wholesale distributor bonds.
$750. Five minutes.

Iowa licenses prescription-drug wholesale distributors through the Board of Pharmacy, and conditions the license on a surety bond. The smaller tier is a fixed $25,000 bond for distributors with $10 million or less in prior-year Iowa gross receipts — ours is $750 flat, which is 3% of the bond amount.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A wholesale distributor of prescription drugs in Iowa must be licensed by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy, and the license is conditioned on a surety bond running to the State for the benefit of anyone harmed. The bond stands behind your compliance with Iowa pharmacy law and the payment of any fines, fees, or restitution you owe.

The amount is tiered to your size: a distributor whose prior-year Iowa gross receipts were $10 million or less posts a $25,000 bond; at or above $10 million, the bond is $100,000. An irrevocable letter of credit is an accepted substitute, and a government-owned distributor is exempt.

It is not insurance for you. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Distributors who keep their license in good standing and pay what they owe treat the bond as a licensing formality, and we keep your $25,000 filing continuous with renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

Iowa Board of Pharmacy — wholesale distributor licensureIowa licenses prescription-drug wholesale distributors through the Board of Pharmacy (administered with the Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing). The bond is $25,000 for distributors with $10 million or less in prior-year Iowa gross receipts and $100,000 above that, with an irrevocable letter of credit accepted in lieu and government-owned distributors exempt. The board's wholesale-distributor rules (formerly 657 IAC ch. 17) were restructured in 2025; confirm your current tier and form on your application or send it to us.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Iowa pharmacy wholesale distributor bond? +
For the smaller-distributor tier the premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the fixed $25,000 bond amount. The $25,000 applies to distributors with $10 million or less in prior-year Iowa gross receipts; larger distributors post a $100,000 bond, which is $3,000 at the same 3%.
Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Which tier am I in? +
It depends on your prior tax year Iowa gross receipts: $10 million or less posts the $25,000 bond; $10 million or more posts $100,000. If you submit the $25,000 bond, the board generally asks for proof of your prior-year receipts. Send us your figures and we will confirm.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the wholesale distributor license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
