What the lottery retailer bond actually covers

A licensed Florida Lottery retailer collects money for tickets that ultimately belongs to the state. Under Fla. Stat. § 24.112, the Florida Lottery can require a retailer to post a bond as a financial guarantee that those funds are remitted.

The amount is set by the Lottery case by case, based on the retailer's financial standing and sales — but it may not exceed twice the retailer's average estimated ticket sales for a remittance period. The Lottery can also use blanket bonds or accept eligible securities (CDs, U.S. bonds) in lieu of a surety bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the Lottery recovers unpaid funds against the bond, you repay the surety. We issue the amount the Florida Lottery sets, with pricing from $100 and your exact price shown at the application.

Fla. Stat. § 24.112Florida Statutes § 24.112 lets the Department of the Lottery require a retailer to post a surety bond before receiving a lottery license, in an amount that may not exceed twice the retailer’s average estimated ticket sales for a remittance period. The Lottery may instead purchase blanket bonds or allow a retailer to deposit eligible securities with the Chief Financial Officer. Confirm your required amount with the Florida Lottery.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Florida lottery retailer bond?Pricing is 2% of the bond amount, with a $100 minimum. The amount itself is set by the Florida Lottery — it cannot exceed twice your average estimated ticket sales for a remittance period. Enter the figure on your notice in the on-page calculator to see your exact price.
Does every retailer need a bond? No. Under § 24.112 the Lottery can require a bond, but it may also use blanket bonds covering retailers or accept eligible securities instead. Whether you need one — and the amount — comes from the Florida Lottery.
What does the bond guarantee? That you remit the ticket-sale funds you owe the state. If you fail to, the Florida Lottery can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? At the standard amounts the application collects no credit information, and most applications approve instantly. Larger bond amounts add a credit-consent step on the form; if a check ever runs, it's a soft pull that never touches your score.
Can I post something other than a surety bond?Yes — § 24.112 lets a retailer deposit eligible securities (such as CDs or U.S. bonds) with the Chief Financial Officer instead. A surety bond is usually cheaper, since you pay a modest premium rather than tying up the full amount in cash.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
How do I contact Light RFP about this bond?Email insurance@lightrfp.com. It reaches the bond team at Light RFP Risk Management Services LLC (NY DFS License # PC-1978982). Write to us about quotes, applications, bond forms or certificates. We will respond within 24 hours.
