About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the turnpike toll bond actually covers

Florida's Turnpike was originally named the Sunshine State Parkway and was renamed in 1968; our carrier still uses the old name for this bond. The bond itself belongs to FDOT's statewide SunPass program, which covers the Turnpike and other Florida toll roads. The SunPass Customer Agreement requires a bond, and a current FEIN, to open a Fleet Postpaid account; a postpaid fleet application also needs a minimum purchase of 101 transponders. For rental-car and intermediary service provider postpaid accounts, the Agreement says a bond may be required.

The bond stands behind the tolls billed to the postpaid account: if the account holder fails to pay tolls owed, FDOT can recover against the bond. FDOT does not publish the amount, a bond form or a term, so get them from SunPass when you apply.

This is a contractual / account-specific guarantee, not a broad statewide license mandate. Whether you need one depends on the account type: required for Fleet Postpaid, possible for rental-car and intermediary postpaid accounts, and not mentioned for prepaid or government accounts. Confirm the amount with SunPass; pricing starts from $100 and your exact price appears at the application.

FDOT SunPass Customer Agreement (May 2021), §5.1.3Section 5.1.3 (Fleet Postpaid Accounts): a bond must be provided and a current Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) is required to open an account of this type. Sections 5.1.4 and 5.1.5 say a bond may be required for rental-car and intermediary service provider postpaid accounts. No Florida statute or rule requires this bond, and FDOT publishes no amount, form or term for it, so confirm them with SunPass before bonding.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is the "Sunshine State Parkway"?It's the original name of Florida's Turnpike, which was renamed in 1968. Our carrier still uses it in this bond's product name. FDOT's SunPass documents do not; they simply require a bond for a Fleet Postpaid account.
How much is the bond?Pricing is 2% of the bond amount, with a $100 minimum. FDOT does not publish the bond amount or how it sets it, so get the figure from SunPass when you apply, then enter it in the on-page calculator to see your exact price.
What does it guarantee?Payment of the tolls billed to a postpaid SunPass account. If the account holder fails to pay tolls owed, FDOT can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? At the standard amounts the application collects no credit information, and most applications approve instantly. Larger bond amounts add a credit-consent step on the form; if a check ever runs, it's a soft pull that never touches your score.
Do all Turnpike users need this? No. Most drivers pay through a prepaid SunPass account or toll-by-plate and never need a bond. The SunPass Customer Agreement requires one only for a Fleet Postpaid account, and says one may be required for rental-car and intermediary service provider postpaid accounts. It mentions none for prepaid fleet or government accounts.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
How do I contact Light RFP about this bond?Email insurance@lightrfp.com. It reaches the bond team at Light RFP Risk Management Services LLC (NY DFS License # PC-1978982). Write to us about quotes, applications, bond forms or certificates. We will respond within 24 hours.
