CO collection agency bonds.
0.5% of the bond amount.

Colorado licenses collection agencies through the Attorney General's office under the Colorado Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and C.R.S. 5-16-124 requires a bond of $12,000 to $20,000 — sized to the sums you remit to clients — payable to the Attorney General. The premium is 0.5% of the bond amount, $100 minimum, the bond issues the moment you pay, and any credit screen is a soft pull only — it never affects your score.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Colorado regulates debt collectors under the Colorado Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, administered by the Consumer Credit Unit of the Department of Law. C.R.S. 5-16-124 requires a licensed collection agency to maintain a bond payable to the Attorney General of the State of Colorado — a minimum of $12,000, plus $2,000 for each $10,000 (or part) by which the average monthly sums remitted or owed to clients in the previous year exceed $15,000, capped at $20,000.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the Attorney General (the obligee). The bond stands behind your handling of client money — the sums you collect and must remit — and your compliance with the Act's conduct rules. A lapsed bond puts the license itself at risk.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay continuously on file for as long as you hold the license; we track the term and send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

C.R.S. 5-16-124Section 5-16-124 of the Colorado Fair Debt Collection Practices Act sets the collection agency bond: payable to the Attorney General, in a minimum amount of $12,000 plus $2,000 for each $10,000 or part thereof by which average monthly sums remitted or owed to clients in the previous year exceed $15,000, not to exceed $20,000. Confirm your required amount with the Consumer Credit Unit of the Colorado Department of Law.
