About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Colorado adopted the Uniform Debt-Management Services Act (C.R.S. Title 5, Article 19, Part 2), which requires anyone providing debt-management or debt-settlement services to Colorado residents to register with the Administrator — the Attorney General's Consumer Credit Unit. Section 5-19-213 requires a registrant to file a $50,000 surety bond (or another amount the Administrator determines is warranted) that runs to the benefit of the state and of individuals harmed by a violation.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the state (the obligee). The bond stands behind your compliance with the Act — the fee limits, disclosure duties, and trust-account rules that protect consumers whose money you handle in a debt-management plan.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Registrations renew annually, and the bond must stay continuously on file; we track the term and send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

C.R.S. 5-19-213Section 5-19-213 of Colorado's Uniform Debt-Management Services Act requires a registered provider to file a surety bond in the amount of $50,000 — or another larger or smaller amount the Administrator determines is warranted by the provider's financial condition, business experience, service history, and the risk to individuals. The bond runs to the state for the benefit of harmed individuals, and the registration lapses without it.
