WA motor vehicle dealer bonds.
$300 flat.

Also known as the Washington auto dealer bond or car dealer bond.

Washington requires every licensed motor vehicle dealer to file a $30,000 bond with the Department of Licensing for each business location. Ours is $300 flat — the checkout price, identical for every dealer. A soft credit pull may run as part of underwriting; it never affects your score, and e-signed delivery follows in 1–2 business days.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Washington licenses motor vehicle dealers through the Department of Licensing, and conditions the license on a $30,000 surety bond filed before the license issues. The bond is a consumer-and-public-protection guarantee: it stands behind your compliance with Washington's dealer law and the taxes and fees you owe the state.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and the State of Washington together with harmed buyers (the protected parties). If a dealer commits fraud, fails to deliver clear title, or otherwise violates dealer law, a harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. A dealer must maintain a bond for each business location, and if the bond is exhausted or canceled, the license is automatically canceled until a new bond is on file.

RCW 46.70.070RCW 46.70.070 requires a motor vehicle dealer to file a $30,000 surety bond with the Department of Licensing before a dealer license issues, naming the State of Washington as obligee for the benefit of harmed buyers and the state. Dealers maintain a bond for each business location; on exhaustion or cancellation of the bond the license is automatically canceled. Confirm your required amount on your application.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do I pay the $30,000?No. You pay $300 — the checkout price for this bond. The $30,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state and harmed buyers; it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? The Washington Department of Licensing requires it as a condition of a motor vehicle dealer license, under RCW 46.70.070. No active bond, no license.
What does the bond guarantee? That you follow Washington dealer law, deliver clear title, handle customer funds properly, and pay the taxes and fees you owe the state. If you fail to and someone is harmed, they can claim against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check?A quick soft credit check may apply — never a hard inquiry, no impact on your score. It's the only extra step beyond the application, and it informs approval, not price. The price stays $300 either way: credit can affect whether we approve the bond, never what it costs.
When does it renew?Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years — your choice at purchase. You'll get renewal notices 60 and 30 days before expiration, with autopay available, and the bond must stay active for your dealer license to stay valid.
