About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the broker bond actually covers

Washington's Office of the Insurance Commissioner regulates producers under chapter 48.17 RCW. When a resident producer brokers business — places insurance, directly or indirectly, with an insurer the producer is not appointed by — RCW 48.17.250 requires a surety bond in favor of the people of Washington (or a named insured).

The bond amount is the greater of $2,500 or five percent of the premiums brokered in the previous calendar year, and it is capped at $100,000 total aggregate liability. The premium is 0.775% of the bond amount, with a $100 minimum, so brokers at the $2,500 floor typically pay right at that minimum.

The bond protects clients and insurers against a producer's wrongdoing in brokered placements — mishandled premiums, for example. If the surety pays a valid claim, you repay the surety; it is a guarantee, not insurance for you. Enter the amount that applies to start the application; the application collects no credit information at the standard amount.
