About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the vegetation control bond actually covers

TDOT's Outdoor Advertising office issues vegetation control permits that let a sign owner cut and remove vegetation on the state right-of-way adjacent to a permitted off-premise sign, so the sign stays visible. Because that work touches the public right-of-way, the Department conditions the permit on a surety bond.

TDOT provides the form — either a per-permit surety bond or a running surety form — and the bond must remain in full force throughout the 45-day duration of the permit and until the work is completed and approved by the Department. A certificate of renewal is required if the bond would expire mid-permit.

The bond backs your compliance with the permit and proper restoration of the right-of-way. (Separately, TDOT requires liability insurance — generally $300,000 per person and $1,000,000 per occurrence — which is not the same as this bond.) Enter the amount TDOT set and we issue the bond at a flat 3% with no credit check.

TDOT Maintenance rules (Outdoor Advertising), TCA Title 54The Tennessee Department of Transportation administers vegetation control permits for outdoor advertising through its Outdoor Advertising office under TDOT rules (Maintenance Division, e.g. Rule 1680-02-03) and the highways statutes in TCA Title 54. The permit requires a surety bond on the Department's form, kept in force through the 45-day permit term and until work is approved, plus separate liability insurance. Confirm the exact bond amount and form on your TDOT permit packet.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Tennessee vegetation control bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The amount itself is set by TDOT on your permit. Enter that figure and the quote updates.
How long does the bond need to stay in force? +
TDOT requires it to remain in full force throughout the 45-day duration of the executed permit and until the work is completed and approved. If the bond would expire mid-permit, the Department requires a certificate of renewal.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the vegetation control bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
Is this the same as the liability insurance TDOT asks for? +
No. TDOT also requires liability insurance (generally $300,000 per person and $1,000,000 per occurrence). That is separate from this surety bond — the bond backs your compliance with the permit, the insurance covers injury and property damage.
Which form do I file? +
TDOT provides the form — either a per-permit surety bond or a running surety form. We issue the executed bond on the form the Department names on your permit packet, ready to submit.
