About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Ohio registers sewage treatment system service providers under ORC Chapter 3718 and OAC 3701-29-03 — the people who service, maintain, and operate STS, including the operation-and-maintenance work that many systems require. The registration is conditioned on a statewide surety bond filed with the Department of Health.

The standard service provider bond is $25,000. A provider who also holds an STS installer registration may carry a reduced $15,000 service provider bond, because the installer bond already provides part of the financial security.

The bond provides financial security for enforcement of the registration law and protects against improper service work. Like the installer and hauler bonds, this bonding is statewide — local health districts may not require an additional service provider bond.

ORC Chapter 3718 / OAC 3701-29-03Ohio Revised Code Chapter 3718 and Ohio Administrative Code 3701-29-03 require sewage treatment system service providers to register and maintain a statewide surety bond filed with the Department of Health — $25,000 standard, reduced to $15,000 for a provider who also holds an STS installer registration. ORC 3718.02 bars local health districts from requiring an additional bond. Confirm which amount applies to you.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Ohio STS service provider bond? +
The premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the $25,000 standard bond amount. If you also hold an STS installer registration, you qualify for the reduced $15,000 bond, which is $450.
When does the $15,000 amount apply? +
A service provider who also holds an STS installer registration may carry a reduced $15,000 service provider bond. If that is you, we have a separate $15,000 page — or just tell us and we will issue the right one.
Do I need a separate bond for each county? +
No. The service provider bond is statewide. ORC 3718.02 prohibits a local health district from requiring an additional bond for this registration.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Fixed-amount registration bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
STS registrations are subject to statutory renewal dates (December 31), and the bond renews on the term you select. We send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.
