About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Springfield licenses new and used motor vehicle dealers operating in the city, and conditions the license on a $5,000 bond. It's a consumer-and-public-protection guarantee that you'll conduct your dealership in compliance with City ordinances and deal honestly with buyers.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Springfield together with harmed buyers (the protected parties). If a dealer violates City code or harms a customer, the harmed party can recover against the bond up to $5,000.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for the life of your dealer license, so we track it and send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Springfield auto dealer bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. 3% of the $5,000 bond is $150, which falls below the $275 floor, so every dealer pays $275. There is no quote process.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the City and harmed buyers if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The City of Springfield requires it as a condition of a new and/or used motor vehicle dealer license under its business licensing ordinance.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the dealer license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
