About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Springfield licenses trade contractors — electrical, mechanical, gas, and plumbing — through its Building Development Services division, and conditions the license on a contractor's license bond. It's a compliance guarantee that you'll follow the City's building and trade codes and properly complete the work you permit.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Springfield (the obligee). If you violate the City code, leave work incomplete, or damage public property and the City suffers a loss, the City can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays the City, you repay the surety. We issue the amount the City set, at a flat 3% with no credit check, and the bond must stay active for the life of your license.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Springfield contractor's license bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The amount itself is set by the City of Springfield on your license application — enter that figure and the quote updates.
Do I pay the bond amount? +
No. You pay the 3% premium. The bond amount is the surety's maximum liability to the City if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
Springfield Building Development Services requires it as a condition of a licensed-trade contractor license — electrical, mechanical, gas, or plumbing.
Is there a credit check? +
No — this bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license. We send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your city license never lapses over a missed email.
