About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Minnesota licenses private detectives and protective agents through the Board of Private Detective and Protective Agent Services, and conditions the license on a $10,000 surety bond. The bond is a conduct guarantee: it financially backs your honest, lawful performance of detective or protective-agent duties.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and the State of Minnesota (the obligee), with the public as the protected parties. If a licensee commits misconduct in the course of the work, a harmed party can recover against the bond.

The bond must stay active for the life of your license. Let it lapse and your license is at risk — so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out, keeping your $10,000 filing continuous.

Minn. Stat. 326.3382Minnesota Statutes 326.3382 requires an applicant for a private detective or protective agent license to file a $10,000 corporate surety bond, payable to the State of Minnesota, with the Board of Private Detective and Protective Agent Services. The bond financially covers misconduct committed in the course of the licensee's duties and must be issued by a surety authorized to do business in Minnesota.

Five minutes. The whole thing.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Minnesota private detective bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every licensee. The $10,000 is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond? +
License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many licensees finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
Does this cover both detectives and protective agents? +
Yes. The same $10,000 bond requirement under Minn. Stat. 326.3382 applies to private detective and protective agent licenses issued by the Board. Confirm your license class on your application.
