About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A sign erector bond is a public-protection guarantee. You hang and anchor signs on buildings and over the City of Detroit's public ways, and the City wants a financial backstop that you build to code and don't leave the public exposed to a falling-sign hazard.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Detroit (the obligee), with the public as the protected party. If your sign work damages city property or a person, or you violate your city license terms, a claim can be made against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Erectors who build to code and pull the right permits treat the bond as a license formality, and we keep your $5,000 filing continuous with renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

City of Detroit — Buildings, Safety Engineering & Environmental DepartmentThe City of Detroit requires this $5,000 bond as a condition of its sign erector license; the bond amount and license terms are set by the City of Detroit (Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department / business license office). Confirm the current filing requirement with the City when you apply.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the City of Detroit sign erector bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. The bond amount is $5,000, and 3% of $5,000 is $150, which falls below the $275 floor, so every sign erector pays $275. There is no quote process.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond? +
City license bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many contractors finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount city license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the city license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
