The City of Northlake’s Building Department licenses every contractor and subcontractor working inside city limits. Licensing is conditioned on a $10,000 surety bond, filed alongside a Certificate of Insurance naming the City as holder, before the Building Department will issue or renew a contractor license.
It’s a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Northlake (the obligee). The bond guarantees your licensed work complies with city permit conditions and code — so Northlake isn’t left absorbing the cost of a job performed out of code or a permit closed out improperly.
It is not insurance for you. If the City makes a valid claim and the surety pays, you repay the surety. The license, and the bond behind it, runs one year from the date of issuance, so plan the renewal alongside your license fee.
