About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Illinois regulates lawn sprinkler / irrigation contractors under the Illinois Lawn Sprinkler System Code (77 Ill. Adm. Code Part 892), administered by the Department of Public Health. The bond is an indemnification guarantee that you'll comply with the Code, which exists to protect the public water supply from cross-connection and backflow hazards.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the people of Illinois (the protected parties), with the Department of Public Health as obligee. If a contractor's failure to comply with the Code causes a person injury or financial loss, the harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The registration and bond renew annually, so we track yours and notify you 60 and 30 days out to keep your $20,000 filing continuous.

Illinois Lawn Sprinkler System Code (225 ILCS 320; 77 Ill. Adm. Code 892)Under the Illinois Plumbing License Law / Lawn Sprinkler System Code (225 ILCS 320 and 77 Ill. Adm. Code Part 892), every irrigation contractor installing lawn sprinkler systems must annually register with the Department of Public Health and provide a $20,000 indemnification bond, on a form provided by the Department, for the benefit of any person injured or suffering financial loss by reason of the contractor's failure to comply with the Code. Confirm the current amount and form on your registration packet.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Illinois irrigation contractor bond? +
The premium is $600 — a flat 3% of the fixed $20,000 bond amount, the same for every contractor. The $20,000 is set by the Lawn Sprinkler System Code, so there is no quote process.
Who requires this bond? +
The Illinois Department of Public Health requires it as a condition of registering as a lawn sprinkler / irrigation contractor, under the Illinois Lawn Sprinkler System Code (77 Ill. Adm. Code Part 892).
Do I pay the $20,000? +
No. You pay $600. The $20,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
Irrigation contractor registration renews annually, so the bond must stay active each year. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
