Pocatello licenses private detective agencies and merchant patrol businesses under City Code Chapter 5.44. Before any license issues, that chapter requires the applicant to file a surety bond with the Chief of Police, approved by the city attorney as to form and sufficiency, in the sum of $10,000.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Pocatello — the bond is taken in the name of "the people of the city" (the obligee) — with anyone injured by the licensee's negligent, wilful, malicious, or wrongful act able to bring an action directly on the bond to recover damages.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Pocatello licenses under this chapter run on a calendar year, valid January 1 through December 31 with fees not prorated, so we track the renewal date and notify you ahead of the deadline to keep the bond continuous.
