Boise licenses private patrol services, security services, and security alarm installation services through the City Clerk's Office. Boise City Code, Title 3, Chapter 12 (Private Security Service) conditions that license on a $10,000 fiduciary bond naming the City, in addition to a separate liability insurance requirement.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Boise (the obligee), with the public as the protected party. If a licensed security service's conduct causes harm the bond is meant to cover, a claim can be brought against the bond up to the $10,000 penal sum.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Boise licenses in this chapter expire March 31 of each year (individual private patrol agents and alarm installers expire one year from issuance instead), so we track your renewal and notify you ahead of the deadline to keep the bond current.
