About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Idaho regulates money transmission — selling or issuing payment instruments and transmitting money — through the Department of Finance under the Idaho Money Transmitters Act. Idaho Code § 26-2908 requires every license application to be accompanied by a surety bond (or an irrevocable letter of credit or similar security device) that runs to the state for the benefit of any claimants against the licensee.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Idaho (the obligee) — securing the faithful handling, transmission, and payment of the money you receive. Claimants can sue directly on the bond, or the director can sue on their behalf. The base amount is $10,000, plus $5,000 for each Idaho location beyond the first, capped at $500,000.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The security must stay in place for the life of the license and for two years after you stop transmitting money in Idaho, so we track the term and send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

Idaho Code § 26-2908Section 26-2908 of the Idaho Money Transmitters Act requires each license application to be accompanied by a surety bond, irrevocable letter of credit, or similar security device in the amount of $10,000, plus $5,000 per additional location, up to a maximum of $500,000. The security runs to the state for the benefit of claimants, who may sue on it directly, and it must remain in place for two years after the licensee ceases money transmission operations in Idaho.
