About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Hawaii licenses private detectives, guards, and their agencies through the Board of Private Detectives and Guards under HRS chapter 463, and conditions each license on a $5,000 surety bond. The bond is conditioned on the honest conduct of the business of the licensee.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State (the obligee). Any person injured by the willful, malicious, or wrongful act of the licensee may bring an action on the bond in the person's own name — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.

The bond must stay active for your license. The surety must give the Board at least 30 days' written notice before any cancellation, and termination of the bond suspends the license until a replacement is filed — so we track it and send renewal notices ahead of expiration.

HRS chapter 463 (Board of Private Detectives and Guards)Hawaii Revised Statutes chapter 463 conditions a private detective, guard, or agency license on a bond of not less than $5,000, conditioned on the honest conduct of the business and giving any person injured by a wrongful act of the licensee a right of action on the bond. The surety must notify the Board at least 30 days before cancellation; termination suspends the license until a replacement bond is filed.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Hawaii detective/guard bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. The bond amount is fixed at $5,000 by HRS chapter 463, and 3% of $5,000 ($150) is below our $275 floor, so every licensee pays the same $275.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Hawaii Board of Private Detectives and Guards requires it as a condition of a license under HRS chapter 463. No active bond, no license.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
What happens if my bond cancels? +
The surety must give the Board at least 30 days’ written notice before cancellation, and termination of the bond suspends your license until a replacement is on file. We send renewal notices ahead of time so it never lapses on a missed email.
