The City of Jacksonville requires a $5,000 bond from each applicant for a sign permit, filed with the Building Inspection Division before the permit issues. An owner putting up a sign that is not lit, no larger than 32 square feet and no taller than eight feet is exempt. The bond is a code-and-public-protection guarantee: it stands behind your compliance with the City sign code (Chapter 326) and sign work done in a good and workmanlike manner.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and the City of Jacksonville (the obligee, the party the bond is payable to), with the public as the protected parties. The bond also holds the City harmless for damage caused by your sign work, and anyone injured by a breach of the sign code or of the bond can sue on it, with several claims possible up to the $5,000 total.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. We track the bond and notify you 60 and 30 days before expiration so the bond on file with the City never lapses over a missed renewal.
These are the actual underwriting fields. Submit once and your bond is issued when you pay.
