DC public adjuster bonds.
$200 flat.

The District of Columbia requires every public insurance adjuster to file a fixed $20,000 bond with the Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking — ours is $200 flat, set by our carrier's rate book for this bond. The bond issues the moment you pay — no credit review of any kind, not even a soft pull.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A public adjuster bond is a policyholder-protection guarantee. You negotiate insurance claims on behalf of people who've just had the worst week of their year — DC wants a financial backstop that you'll handle their claims and their money honestly.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the District of Columbia (the obligee), with your clients as the protected parties. The bond runs to the District and authorizes recovery if a licensee is found to have committed fraud or unfair practices as a public adjuster.

The bond must stay active for the life of your license. Let it lapse and you can be referred for action against the license — so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out, keeping your $20,000 filing continuous.

D.C. Code § 31-1631.05The District of Columbia Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking licenses public insurance adjusters under D.C. Code § 31-1631 et seq. Section 31-1631.05 conditions the license on a $20,000 bond that runs to the District and specifically authorizes the Commissioner to recover damages sustained if the licensee is found to have committed fraud or unfair practices in connection with the adjuster business.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the DC public adjuster bond? The premium is $200 — set by our carrier's rate book for the fixed $20,000 bond amount, the same for every adjuster. The $20,000 is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $20,000?No. You pay $200. The $20,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond?License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many adjusters finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information, and most license bonds like this approve instantly with no credit review. If a check is ever needed, it's a soft pull only — it never affects your score.
When does it renew? The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
