About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Alabama licenses heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration contractors through the Board of Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors (HACR Board) under Code of Alabama Title 34, Chapter 31. By Board rule (Alabama Administrative Code 440-X-3-.04), an active-status contractor must file a $20,000 performance bond.

The bond is a code-compliance and consumer-protection guarantee: it conditions you to faithfully observe Alabama's building codes and the ordinances and laws of the state, counties, and municipalities where you work. It is a three-party arrangement — you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the HACR Board (the obligee).

The bond is for active status only. Contractors who hold an inactive certification and do not perform installation, service, or repair are not required to bond. If you switch to active status, the $20,000 bond is part of that switch — and the bond must stay active for the life of your active license.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Alabama refrigeration contractor bond? +
The premium is $600 — a flat 3% of the fixed $20,000 bond amount, the same for every contractor. The $20,000 is set by Board rule, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $20,000? +
No. You pay $600. The $20,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires it? +
The Alabama Board of Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors (HACR Board), under Code of Alabama Title 34, Chapter 31 and Administrative Code 440-X-3-.04, requires it of active-status contractors. Inactive certifications do not require the bond.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold an active HACR license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
