About this bond

What the RV dealer bond actually covers

Wisconsin licenses recreational vehicle dealers, manufacturers, and distributors under Wis. Stat. § 218.11, administered by the Department of Transportation. A dealer (or applicant) must provide and maintain a bond — or irrevocable letter of credit — of not less than $50,000.

The bond is executed in the name of the Department of Transportation for the benefit of any person who sustains a loss because of a dealer act that would be grounds to suspend or revoke the license. It's a consumer-and-public-protection guarantee: clean title, honest dealing, and compliance with RV dealer law.

It's a three-party arrangement — you (the principal), the surety, and WisDOT together with harmed buyers (the protected parties). If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety; it is not insurance for you. The bond is filed on the WisDOT dealer bond form (MV2511).

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Wisconsin RV dealer bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount. The statute sets the minimum at $50,000, so most dealers pay $1,500 (3% of $50,000). If WisDOT requires a higher amount, the 3% scales up. Enter your amount and the quote updates.
Do I pay the $50,000? +
No. You pay $1,500 on a $50,000 bond. The $50,000 is the surety's maximum liability to harmed buyers and the state — it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation requires it as a condition of a recreational vehicle dealer license under Wis. Stat. § 218.11. No active bond, no license.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the RV dealer bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
Which form do I file? +
The WisDOT dealer bond form (MV2511), submitted with your recreational vehicle dealer license application. We issue the executed bond ready to file.
