Washington licenses plumbing contractors through the Department of Labor & Industries, and RCW 18.106.410 conditions that license on a $6,000 continuous surety bond with the State of Washington named as obligee.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Washington (the obligee), with the public protected. The bond stands behind your obligation to pay taxes and wages and to perform the plumbing contracts you take on; a harmed party can recover against it.
The bond is continuous — if the surety cancels or withdraws, your plumbing contractor license is automatically suspended until a new bond is filed and approved. So we keep it continuous and notify you well ahead of any lapse. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety.
