About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Idaho licenses plumbing contractors through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) — which absorbed the former Division of Building Safety's plumbing program — and conditions the license on a $2,000 surety bond. The bond is a consumer-and-public-protection guarantee that you perform plumbing work in accordance with Idaho's plumbing laws and code.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Idaho together with harmed parties. If a contractor's faulty or non-compliant work causes a loss, the harmed party can recover against the bond up to $2,000.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Idaho also requires plumbing contractors to carry liability insurance separately; the bond is the small surety filing that conditions your license.

Idaho Code Title 54, Chapter 26 (Plumbing)Idaho's Plumbing and Plumbers law (Title 54, Chapter 26), administered by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL), conditions a plumbing contractor license on a $2,000 surety bond, alongside separate liability-insurance requirements. Confirm current bond and insurance amounts on your DOPL application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Idaho plumbing contractor bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. The bond amount is fixed at $2,000, and 3% of that ($60) falls below the $275 floor we charge to issue and service any bond, so $275 is the price for every plumbing contractor.
Do I pay the $2,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $2,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
Do I also need liability insurance? +
Idaho requires plumbing contractors to carry liability insurance in addition to the bond — they are different things. The bond protects the public and conditions your license; liability insurance protects you. This page is the required surety bond.
How fast will I have it? +
Small license bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many contractors finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
