About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the event promoter bond covers

Virginia regulates professional boxing, wrestling, and martial arts events through the DPOR Boxing, Martial Arts and Professional Wrestling program. Before a promoter license is granted, the applicant must execute and file a bond under Code of Virginia § 54.1-829.

The bond amount equals the sum of (i) the total gate fees and (ii) the total amount due to all boxers, martial artists, and wrestlers for their performance — but it cannot exceed $100,000. It guarantees you meet your promoter obligations, including paying the contestants and honoring the contracts you signed.

If a promoter fails to pay athletes or otherwise breaches the obligations the chapter defines, the harmed party can recover against the bond. Enter your event's gate-plus-purses figure; pricing starts from $100, and the application collects no credit information at the standard amount — and if the surety ever pays, you repay the surety.

Code of Virginia § 54.1-829 (DPOR)Under Code of Virginia § 54.1-829, no license to act as a promoter of professional boxing, wrestling, or martial arts events is granted unless the applicant executes and files a bond with DPOR. The bond amount equals the sum of total gate fees plus the total amount due to all boxers, martial artists, and wrestlers for the event, but shall not exceed $100,000. Confirm your event's figure when you apply.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Virginia event promoter bond?Pricing is 1% of your bond amount, $100 minimum. The amount itself equals your total gate fees plus the purses owed to athletes, capped at $100,000. Enter that figure and your exact price appears in the application.
How do I figure out the bond amount?Add (i) your total gate fees for the event and (ii) the total amount due to all boxers, martial artists, and wrestlers for their performance. That sum is your bond amount — but it never exceeds the $100,000 statutory cap.
What does the bond guarantee? That you meet your promoter obligations under the chapter — chiefly paying the contestants and honoring your contracts. If you fail to and someone is harmed, they can recover against the bond; if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information at the standard amount, and most applications approve instantly. If a check ever runs for a larger amount, it is a soft pull that never affects your credit score.
Where do I file it?With DPOR, alongside your promoter license application to the Boxing, Martial Arts and Professional Wrestling program. We issue the executed bond ready to submit.
