What the timber permit bond actually covers
Texas lets a vehicle hauling unrefined timber — logs, wood chips, woody biomass, or the equipment used to load them — operate at a higher gross weight (up to 84,000 pounds) in the state's timber-producing counties under a permit governed by Transportation Code §623.321, issued by TxDMV. The heavier loads put extra stress on rural roads and bridges, so a $15,000 bond is required.
The bond is a road-and-bridge-damage guarantee: it is conditioned on the owner paying TxDMV, and any municipality whose streets the vehicle uses, for damage the permitted vehicle causes — up to the $15,000 limit. It runs among you (the principal), the surety, and the state and counties as beneficiaries.
A related provision (§623.323) requires notifying affected counties before hauling. If the surety pays a damage claim, you repay the surety — operators who route carefully and file the required county notifications treat the bond as a permit formality, not a risk.
