About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) runs a vehicle inspection (emissions / safety) program, and requires a business that performs inspections to file a $1,000 surety bond as a condition of its inspection license. The bond stands behind the business’s compliance with the inspection rules under ORS 468A.350 to 468A.400.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Oregon (the obligee). If the inspection business violates the program rules and the state or a harmed party suffers a loss, they can recover against the bond up to the $1,000 penal sum.

DEQ wants the original bond on file for the life of the license — let it lapse and your inspection authority can be suspended. We track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out so your filing stays continuous.

ORS 468A.350–468A.400 (DEQ Vehicle Inspection Program)Oregon’s motor vehicle emission and inspection program is governed by ORS 468A.350 to 468A.400, administered by the Department of Environmental Quality. A business licensed to perform inspections must file and maintain an original $1,000 surety bond with the DEQ Vehicle Inspection Program. Confirm the amount on your DEQ licensing paperwork — send it to us and we’ll match it.

You need this bond if you're

Applying for a DEQ vehicle inspection license — emissions or safety inspection business
Renewing your inspection license and your current bond is expiring or non-renewing
Adding a fleet inspection program that DEQ conditions on a bond
Re-licensing after a lapse that requires a fresh bond on file

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual underwriting fields, including a one-time consent to a soft credit pull. Submit once and your bond is typically issued within 1–2 business days.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Oregon vehicle inspection bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. The bond amount is fixed at $1,000 by DEQ, and 3% of that ($30) falls under the minimum, so every inspection business pays $275.
Who requires this bond? +
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requires it as a condition of a vehicle inspection license, under the inspection program at ORS 468A.350–468A.400. The original bond must be on file with DEQ.
Is there a credit check? +
There is a soft credit pull on this application. It never affects your score, and the rate stays $275 either way — credit can affect approval, never the price.
Do I pay the $1,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $1,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
When does it renew? +
Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years. The original bond must stay on file with DEQ for your inspection license to stay valid; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
