About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Oregon licenses commercial driver training schools through the Department of Transportation, and conditions the certificate on a $2,500 surety bond. The bond is a consumer-protection guarantee: that the school conducts business without fraud or fraudulent representation and follows the rules ODOT adopts for driver training schools.

It's a three-party arrangement: the partnership (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Oregon (the obligee). If a school defrauds a student or violates ODOT's school rules and a student is harmed, the harmed party can recover against the bond.

This page is the partnership form of the bond — the only difference from the corporation and individual versions is the principal named on it. The amount, the price, and what the bond guarantees are identical. If you operate as a corporation or sole proprietor, use the matching page.

ORS 822.505ORS 822.505 requires a $2,500 surety bond for issuance or renewal of a commercial driver training school certificate. The bond runs to the State of Oregon, is approved as to form by the Attorney General, and is conditioned that the school operate without fraudulent representation and without violating the rules the Department of Transportation adopts under ORS 822.515.

You need this bond if you're

A partnership operating a driver training school — the bond names the partnership as principal
Applying for an ODOT school certificate — the bond is filed with your application
Renewing the certificate and your bond is expiring or was non-renewed
Forming a partnership for a driving school that needs the certificate to operate

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Oregon driver training school bond? +
The premium is $275. The bond amount is fixed at $2,500 by ORS 822.505, and 3% of $2,500 is $75 — below our $275 minimum, so the price is $275, the same for every school.
Do I pay the $2,500? +
No. You pay $275. The $2,500 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Which version do I need — partnership, corporation, or individual? +
Match it to how your school is legally organized. This is the partnership version. The amount ($2,500), the price ($275), and the ODOT requirement are identical across all three — only the principal named on the bond differs.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount certificate bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the certificate. Buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your certificate never lapses over a missed email.
