About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the installer bond actually guarantees

Ohio regulates sewage treatment systems — household septic and similar on-site systems — under the Department of Health, and OAC 3701-29-03 requires anyone who installs them to register and post a surety bond. The bond is financial security for the enforcement of the registration rules.

The bond is a public-protection guarantee: it ensures the public can recover for financial harm if an installer fails to comply with the STS registration and installation requirements. The standard installer bond is $25,000 (a higher $40,000 figure can apply to certain registrations — confirm which your health district requires).

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond renews on a statutory December 31 cycle to track the registration year, and the original executed bond is submitted to the Ohio Department of Health.

OAC 3701-29-03 (Ohio Dept. of Health)Ohio Administrative Code 3701-29-03 requires sewage treatment system installers to register and provide a surety bond as financial security for enforcement of the registration rules. The standard installer bond is $25,000 (a $40,000 figure applies to some registrations); the original bond is submitted to the Ohio Department of Health, and registration follows a December 31 renewal cycle. Confirm your required amount with your local health district.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Ohio sewage installer bond? +
The premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the $25,000 bond amount, per year of term. The $25,000 is the standard installer figure, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750. The $25,000 is the surety’s maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Ohio Department of Health, under OAC 3701-29-03, as a condition of registering as a sewage treatment systems installer. The original bond is submitted to ODH.
Why does it renew on December 31? +
STS installer registration follows a statutory December 31 cycle, so the bond is tied to that date. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.
Is it always $25,000? +
The standard installer bond is $25,000, but a $40,000 figure applies to some registrations. Confirm the amount your local health district requires — if it’s $40,000, send it to us and we’ll issue at the flat 3% ($1,200).
