About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Cleveland licenses contractors through its Department of Building and Housing and conditions the general contractor license on a $25,000 surety bond. The bond is a City-and-public-protection guarantee standing behind your compliance with the Codified Ordinances of Cleveland when you construct, alter, repair, add to, or remodel buildings in the city.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Cleveland (the obligee). If you fail to comply with the City's ordinances and someone is harmed, the surety pays valid claims up to the full $25,000 — and you repay the surety.

The bond must stay active for the life of your license. Let it lapse and your license is no longer in good standing — so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out, keeping your $25,000 filing continuous. Cleveland also issues separate bond forms for trade specialties (sewer, sidewalk, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, demolition).

Cleveland Codified Ordinances (Building & Housing)The City of Cleveland, Ohio requires a $25,000 contractor license bond, enforced by its Department of Building and Housing, before a contractor may construct, alter, repair, add to, or remodel buildings and structures in the city. The bond conditions the contractor to comply with the Codified Ordinances of Cleveland. Confirm the form and amount with the Department of Building and Housing.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Cleveland contractor license bond? +
The premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the $25,000 bond amount, the same for every contractor. Cleveland sets the $25,000, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the City and harmed parties if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The City of Cleveland's Department of Building and Housing requires it as a condition of a contractor license, under the Codified Ordinances of Cleveland. No active bond, no license.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Fixed-amount municipal license bonds like this one don't need one.
Do I need a different bond for a trade specialty? +
This is the general contractor license bond. Cleveland issues separate bond forms for sewer, sidewalk, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and demolition work — send us the form your license names and we will issue the right one.
