What the autism scholarship bond covers

The Ohio Autism Scholarship Program lets families of children with autism use state scholarship funds to pay an approved provider for special-education services. Providers register with the state, and under Ohio Administrative Code 3301-103-07 a registered provider must post a surety bond.

The amount is the greater of one-twelfth of the scholarship funds the provider received in the prior year or $10,000, with a $250,000 cap — so it scales with how much scholarship money flows through you, while staying bounded at both ends.

The bond is a financial guarantee to the state: if a provider violates the program rules or mishandles scholarship funds and causes a loss, the state can recover against the bond. The bond runs continuously and renews annually for as long as you participate. If the surety pays, you repay the surety.

OAC 3301-103-07Under Ohio Administrative Code 3301-103-07, an Autism Scholarship Program provider must file a surety bond in an amount equal to the greater of one-twelfth of the scholarship funds received during the previous program year or $10,000, not to exceed $250,000. The bond is continuous until canceled and renews annually. Confirm your required amount with the program before filing.
