About this bond

What the adult driver-school bond covers

Ohio's abbreviated adult driver training is the classroom-and-behind-the-wheel course required of new adult and limited-term license applicants. The schools that deliver it are licensed by the ODPS Office of Driver Training under R.C. Chapter 4508, and a school can't operate until its performance bond is on file.

Under Ohio Administrative Code 4501-7-08, the bond or escrow is no less than $10,000 for the first school, plus $2,000 for each additional school the same enterprise licenses — sufficient to reimburse students for training the school does not supply.

The bond protects students who prepay for the course: if the school closes or fails to deliver the training, they recover their tuition against the bond. If the surety pays, you repay the surety — so a school that delivers its course treats the bond as a licensing checkbox.

R.C. Chapter 4508 / OAC 4501-7-08Abbreviated adult driver training schools are licensed by the ODPS Office of Driver Training under R.C. Chapter 4508. Under OAC 4501-7-08, the performance bond or escrow is no less than $10,000 for the first school plus $2,000 for each additional school licensed by the same enterprise, to reimburse students for training not supplied. Confirm the exact amount on your ODPS certification.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is this bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The amount is set by ODPS rule — $10,000 for your first school plus $2,000 for each additional location. Enter your figure and the quote updates.
Who requires it? +
The ODPS Office of Driver Training, as a condition of your driver training school license under R.C. Chapter 4508 and OAC 4501-7-08. The bond must be on file before the school operates.
What does the bond guarantee? +
That you'll refund students for course training you don't deliver — for example, if the school closes mid-course. Harmed students recover against the bond, and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? +
No — this bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
Is this different from the Class D school bond? +
It's the same ODPS bonding framework and the same $10,000 + $2,000-per-location math — just for the abbreviated adult course rather than a Class D program. If you run both, you bond each licensed school.
