About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

An athlete agent recruits and represents athletes for professional-sports contracts and endorsements. Ohio regulates athlete agents under ORC Chapter 4771 (administered by the Ohio Athletic Commission), and conditions registration on a financial security — one accepted form is a $15,000 surety bond.

The bond runs in favor of the State of Ohio, for the benefit of any person who is injured by a violation of Chapter 4771 or the rules under it — including athletes, educational institutions, and others harmed by improper recruiting or contracting conduct.

The statute lets you satisfy the requirement other ways too — a certificate of deposit or assigned savings account in the same amount, or professional malpractice insurance of at least $50,000. The bond is usually the cheapest path, since you pay the 3% premium rather than locking up $15,000 in cash. You must maintain the security or the Commission suspends your registration.

ORC Chapter 4771 (Athlete Agents)Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4771 governs athlete agents (administered by the Ohio Athletic Commission) and requires a financial security to register. Accepted forms include a $15,000 surety bond in favor of the state for the benefit of any person injured by a violation of the chapter, a $15,000 certificate of deposit or assigned savings account, or professional malpractice insurance of at least $50,000. Registration is generally valid for two years; the security must be maintained or registration is suspended.

How much is the Ohio athlete agent bond? +
The premium is $450 — a flat 3% of the $15,000 bond amount, the same for every agent.
Do I have to use a bond? +
No — Ohio accepts several forms of security: a $15,000 surety bond, a $15,000 CD or assigned savings account, or professional malpractice insurance of at least $50,000. The bond is usually the cheapest because you pay the 3% premium rather than tying up $15,000 in cash.
Who is protected by the bond? +

Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
Ohio athlete agent registration is generally valid for two years, and you must maintain the security throughout or the Commission suspends your registration. We send renewal notices 60 and 30 days before your bond term ends.
