About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

North Carolina licenses electrical contractors through the State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC). For an Unlimited license — which permits electrical projects of any value — the Board requires the applicant to demonstrate bonding ability: that they can obtain a $150,000 performance bond for electrical work.

A performance bond guarantees the completion of the work you contract for. If a bonded project is left unfinished and the project owner is harmed, they can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety. It is not insurance for you; it backs your performance.

Many applicants satisfy the requirement with a Statement of Bonding Ability rather than a posted bond. If you need an actual $150,000 performance bond filed, this is it at $4,500 flat — and if the Board accepts a statement of bonding ability instead, tell us and we'll point you the right way.

NCBEEC — Unlimited license bonding ability ($150,000)The NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors conditions an Unlimited (U) electrical license on the applicant demonstrating the ability to obtain a $150,000 performance bond (a Statement of Bonding Ability). Some applicants file the statement; others post an actual bond. Confirm with the Board which your application requires — this page issues the $150,000 performance bond.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

Do I pay the $150,000? +
No. You pay $4,500 — the flat 3% of the bond amount. The $150,000 is the surety's maximum liability on the bonded work; it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is this the same as a Statement of Bonding Ability? +
Not exactly. The NCBEEC often accepts a Statement of Bonding Ability — a letter showing you can obtain a $150,000 bond — for the Unlimited license. This page issues an actual $150,000 performance bond. Confirm with the Board which one your application requires, and tell us if you only need the statement.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way: credit can affect whether we approve the bond, never what it costs.
What does the bond guarantee? +
Performance — that you complete the electrical work you contract for. If a bonded project is left unfinished and the owner is harmed, they can claim against the bond, and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
When does it renew? +
Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years — your choice at purchase. You'll get renewal notices 60 and 30 days before expiration, with autopay available, so your bonding evidence stays current.
