About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

North Carolina licenses commercial driver training schools through the Division of Motor Vehicles under G.S. Chapter 20, Article 14. Before the DMV approves a school, it requires a bond — and for a standard commercial driver training school, that bond is $20,000.

The bond is a student-protection guarantee: it indemnifies any student against loss or damage arising out of the school's breach of its contract with the student. If a school takes tuition and fails to deliver the training it promised, a harmed student can recover against the bond.

The DMV scales the bond by school type — a different figure can apply to seminar-only or longer-course schools. This page is the $20,000 commercial driver training school bond; if your license letter names a different amount, send it to us and we'll match it.

G.S. 20-322 (NC DMV)G.S. 20-322 requires a commercial driver training school to be licensed by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles, and DMV rules condition the license on a surety bond — $20,000 for a standard commercial driver training school — to indemnify students against loss from the school's breach of contract. The amount can differ by school type; confirm yours on your DMV license letter.

You need this bond if you're

Opening a commercial driver training school licensed by the NC DMV
Renewing a driver training school license whose bond is expiring or non-renewing
A CDL or truck-driving school the DMV bonds at the $20,000 commercial level
Adding a location the DMV ties to a separate bond filing

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the NC driver training school bond? +
The premium is $600 — a flat 3% of the $20,000 bond amount, the same for every commercial driver training school. The $20,000 is set by DMV rule, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $20,000? +
No. You pay $600. The $20,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid student claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What does the bond protect against? +
It protects your students. If the school breaches its contract — takes tuition and fails to deliver the training — a harmed student can recover against the bond. If the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
Is $20,000 always the right amount? +
It's the standard amount for a commercial driver training school. The DMV uses different figures for some school types (seminar-only or longer courses). If your license letter names a different amount, send it to us and we'll issue that one.
