About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

New Jersey licenses private detectives under the Private Detective Act of 1939 (N.J.S.A. 45:19-8 to 45:19-27), administered by the State Police Private Detective Unit. The license is conditioned on a surety bond — a public-protection guarantee standing behind your compliance with the Act.

For an individual license the bond is $3,000; a detective agency license carries a larger bond (commonly $5,000). It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of New Jersey (the obligee), with the public as the protected parties.

If an investigator violates the Act and causes a loss, the harmed party can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for the life of your license, so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out.

N.J.S.A. 45:19-12 conditions the license on a surety bond — $3,000 for an individual license and a larger amount (commonly $5,000) for a detective agency. FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the New Jersey private detective bond? +
For the $3,000 individual bond, the premium is $275 — our minimum, since 3% of $3,000 is only $90. A detective agency license carries a larger bond, which prices at a flat 3%. Send us your State Police notice and we’ll confirm.
Do I pay the $3,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $3,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Individual or agency — which bond do I need? +
An individual private detective license requires a $3,000 bond; a detective agency license requires a larger bond (commonly $5,000). The State Police application tells you which. Send it to us and we’ll size and price it.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
