About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

New Jersey licenses motor vehicle dealers through the Motor Vehicle Commission, and conditions the license on a $10,000 surety bond under N.J.S.A. 39:10-19. The bond is a consumer-and-public-protection guarantee: it stands behind your compliance with the dealer licensing law and your payment of the taxes and fees you owe the State.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and the State of New Jersey together with harmed buyers (the protected parties). If a dealer violates the licensing law or fails to deliver what a buyer paid for, the harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must run through the March 31 license year, so we date it to your license period and track the renewal for you.

N.J.S.A. 39:10-19New Jersey motor vehicle dealers are licensed by the Motor Vehicle Commission under N.J.S.A. 39:10-19, which conditions a new or used dealer license on a $10,000 surety bond running in favor of the State. The bond must remain in force through the March 31 license-year expiration. Confirm the amount and dating on your MVC application.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do I pay the $10,000?No. You pay $100 — the flat, fixed price for this bond. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state and harmed buyers; it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission requires it as a condition of a new or used motor vehicle dealer license, under N.J.S.A. 39:10-19. No active bond, no license.
What does the bond guarantee? That you follow New Jersey dealer licensing law and pay the taxes and fees you owe the State. If you fail to and someone is harmed, they can claim against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check?A quick soft credit check may run as part of underwriting — it's never a hard inquiry and it never affects your score. It's the only extra step beyond the application, and it informs approval, not price. The price stays $100 either way: credit can affect whether we approve the bond, never what it costs.
When does it renew? The bond must stay active through the March 31 license year. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
