About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

New Jersey licenses driving schools through the Motor Vehicle Commission under N.J.S.A. 39:12-1 et seq. and conditions the license on a $10,000 surety bond. The bond is a student-protection guarantee: it backs the school’s compliance with New Jersey law and protects students against financial harm from a school’s violations.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of New Jersey together with harmed students (the protected parties). If a school takes prepaid fees and fails to deliver, or otherwise violates driving-school law, a harmed student can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.

The bond runs to the December 31 of the license year. By rule, the surety’s total liability cannot exceed $10,000 no matter how many license periods the bond stays in force. We track expiration and notify you 60 and 30 days out so your filing stays continuous.

Confirm the amount and expiration on your MVC application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the New Jersey driving school bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every school. The $10,000 is set by the MVC, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety’s maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond? +
License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many schools finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don’t need one.
When does it expire? +
The MVC bond runs to December 31 of the license year, and the surety’s total liability is capped at $10,000 no matter how long it stays in force. We send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
