About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the wrecker bond actually guarantees

Nevada licenses automobile wreckers through the DMV under NRS Chapter 487. NRS 487.060 provides that no wrecker license issues until the applicant files a $50,000 corporate surety bond, approved as to form by the Attorney General, conditioned on conducting business without fraud or fraudulent representation and without violating the wrecker provisions of the chapter.

The bond is a consumer-and-public-protection guarantee: any person injured by the wrecker’s violation of those provisions may apply to the Director for compensation from the bond. It’s a three-party arrangement — you (the principal), the surety, and the State of Nevada with harmed parties as beneficiaries.

A wrecker licensed for five years or more in good standing may, by agreement with the Department, qualify for a reduced bond — but never below $5,000. Until then the amount is $50,000. We issue it at a flat 3% with one soft credit pull; if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety.

NRS 487.060 (Nevada DMV)NRS 487.060 requires an automobile wrecker to file a $50,000 corporate surety bond with the DMV before a license issues, approved as to form by the Attorney General, conditioned on conducting business without fraud and without violating NRS 487.047 to 487.200 (and 487.710 to 487.890). Any person injured may apply to the Director for compensation from the bond. The Department may reduce the bond for wreckers licensed 5+ years in good standing, but never below $5,000.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

Do I pay the $50,000? +
No. You pay $1,500 — the flat 3% of the bond amount. The $50,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state and harmed parties; it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Nevada DMV requires it under NRS 487.060 as a condition of an automobile-wrecker license. No bond on file, no license — and any person injured by the wrecker can apply to the Director for compensation from the bond.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It's the only extra step beyond the application, and it informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way.
Can my bond amount go down? +
Possibly. A wrecker licensed for five years or more and in good standing may, by agreement with the Department, qualify for a reduced bond — but never below $5,000. We re-issue at the lower amount when the DMV approves it.
When does it renew? +
Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years — your choice at purchase. You'll get renewal notices 60 and 30 days before expiration, with autopay available, and the bond must stay active for your wrecker license to stay valid.
