What the landscape horticulturist bond actually covers
Mississippi licenses landscape horticulturists — people who, for a fee, install or replace plants and render landscaping services — through the Department of Agriculture and Commerce, Bureau of Plant Industry, under the landscape architecture and horticulture provisions of the Mississippi Code (chapter 69-19). You can't advertise, solicit, bid, or contract for landscaping services without a license.
Getting the license requires passing the Landscape Horticulturist exam and a laws-and-safety exam, carrying general liability insurance, and posting a surety bond of at least $1,000. The bond is a consumer-protection guarantee — it backs your compliance with the landscaping laws and your obligations to the customers you contract with.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Mississippi through MDAC (the obligee), with your customers as the protected parties.
