About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Minnesota's Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) registers contractors who perform building sewer and water service installation — "pipe laying" — and conditions registration on a code-compliance surety bond under Minn. Stat. 326B.46. The bond runs to the state in the penal sum of at least $25,000.

The bond is conditioned on faithful and lawful performance of the work in compliance with the plumbing and construction codes. If a registered contractor installs sewer or water service in violation of the code and the state or a harmed party suffers loss, they can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The pipe-laying registration covers building sewer and water service work; contractors doing broader plumbing work hold a full plumbing contractor bond instead. This $25,000 bond is the standard amount for the registration.

Minn. Stat. 326B.46 (DLI)Minnesota Statutes 326B.46 requires a person who performs plumbing work — including building sewer and water service installation under the pipe-laying registration — to give and maintain a bond to the state of at least $25,000, conditioned on the faithful and lawful performance of the work in compliance with the code. The bond is filed with the Department of Labor and Industry. Confirm your registration class and amount with the DLI.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750 — the flat 3% of the bond amount. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state and harmed parties; it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) requires it as a condition of pipe-laying (sewer and water service installer) registration under Minn. Stat. 326B.46.
What does the bond guarantee? +
That you perform building sewer and water service installation lawfully and in compliance with the code. If you violate the code and someone is harmed, they can claim against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way.
When does it renew? +
Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years, and the bond must stay active for your registration to stay valid. We send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out with autopay available.
