About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually covers

Minnesota regulates the movement of oversize and overweight vehicles under Minn. Stat. 169.80 through 169.88. Before moving a load that exceeds legal size or weight limits, you must obtain a permit from the road authority that owns the route — MnDOT for trunk highways, or a city, county, or town for local roads.

Under Minn. Stat. 169.86, the permitting authority may issue, withhold, or condition a permit as necessary to protect road foundations, surfaces, and structures — and may require a surety bond as a financial guarantee that you will repair or pay for damage your move causes to public infrastructure.

A bond is not required for every move — many single-trip and annual permits issue without one. It is most often required for heavier loads or routes over sensitive structures. The amount is set by the road authority; enter that figure and we issue the bond at a flat 3% with a soft pull only.

Minn. Stat. 169.86 (oversize / overweight permits)Minnesota Statutes 169.80–169.88 govern the movement of oversize and overweight vehicles. Under 169.86, the road authority issuing an oversize/overweight permit (MnDOT for trunk highways, or a city, county, or town for local roads) may impose conditions necessary to prevent damage to road foundations, surfaces, and structures, which can include a surety bond. A bond is not required for every permit — confirm whether one is required, and in what amount, with your permitting authority.

Moving a structure or large equipment over a route with sensitive bridges or pavement
Holding an annual or job permit the road authority conditioned on a bond
Routing over local roads where a city, county, or town requires a guarantee

Five minutes, soft pull only.

Submit the application with the bond amount the road authority set, plus a one-time consent to a soft credit pull — the executed bond is typically issued within 1–2 business days.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Minnesota oversize/overweight bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The amount itself is set by the road authority issuing your permit, based on the potential damage from your move. Enter that figure and the quote updates.
Do I always need this bond? +
No. Many oversize/overweight permits issue without a bond. Under Minn. Stat. 169.86 the road authority may require one — most often for heavier loads or routes over sensitive structures. Check your permit conditions or ask the issuing authority.
Who requires it, and what does it cover? +
Whichever road authority owns your route requires it — MnDOT for trunk highways, or a city, county, or town for local roads. The bond is a financial guarantee that you will pay for damage your permitted move causes to roads, bridges, or structures.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% (with our $275 minimum) either way.
What amount should I enter? +
The exact figure the permitting road authority set. There is no single statewide amount — it depends on your route and load. Send us your permit or the requirement and we will confirm.
