What the alcohol bond actually covers

Minnesota licenses brewers, distillers, wineries, and wholesalers through the Department of Public Safety's Division of Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement under Minn. Stat. 340A.301. The commissioner may not issue a manufacturer or wholesaler license to a person who has not filed a bond (or cash, or U.S. government bonds) payable to the state.

The bond is conditioned on the licensee obeying all laws governing the business and paying all taxes, fees, penalties, and other charges when due, and is forfeited to the state on a violation of law. It is a tax-and-compliance guarantee, not insurance for you — if the surety pays, you repay the surety.

The amount is tiered: $1,000 for beer over 3.2% by weight; $2,000, $3,000 by proof-gallon volume for distilled products; $5,000 for wine up to 25% by weight; and $10,000 for intoxicating liquor. Enter the figure your license tier requires, and we issue the bond at a flat 3% with no credit check.

Minn. Stat. 340A.301Under Minn. Stat. 340A.301, the commissioner may not issue a manufacturer or wholesaler license to a person who has not filed a corporate surety bond (or cash, or U.S. government bonds) payable to the state, conditioned on obeying the laws governing the business and paying all taxes, fees, penalties, and charges when due. Amounts are tiered by product and volume — $1,000 for beer, $5,000 for wine, $10,000 for intoxicating liquor, with proof-gallon tiers in between. Confirm your tier with Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Minnesota alcohol manufacturer bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The amount itself is tiered by statute — $1,000 for beer, $5,000 for wine, $10,000 for intoxicating liquor, with proof-gallon tiers in between. Enter the figure your tier requires and the quote updates.
Which tier applies to me? +
It depends on what you make and how much. Minn. Stat. 340A.301 sets $1,000 for beer over 3.2% by weight, tiers of $2,000 and $3,000 by proof-gallon volume for distilled products, $5,000 for wine up to 25% by weight, and $10,000 for intoxicating liquor. Confirm your tier with Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement and enter it.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the alcohol manufacturer bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
What does the bond guarantee? +
That you obey the laws governing the business and pay all taxes, fees, penalties, and charges when due. If you violate the law, the bond is forfeited to the state — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Can I post cash instead? +
The statute accepts a corporate surety bond, cash, or U.S. government bonds. A surety bond is usually the cheapest — you pay the 3% premium rather than tying up the full amount in cash.
