What the expense bond actually guarantees

Maryland regulates professional boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and MMA through the State Athletic Commission under Business Regulation Title 4, Subtitle 3. As a condition of a promoter license, §4-306 requires the promoter to furnish a surety bond — and the Commission requires a promoter’s expense bond covering the expenses of the event for its participants.

The expense bond ensures that participants in the contest have their event expenses covered if the promoter fails to pay them. The minimum amount is $2,000. This is distinct from the boxing and wrestling tax bond, which backs the State’s athletic tax — many promoters carry both.

It is not insurance for you. If a participant is harmed and the surety pays, you repay the surety. Promoters who pay their event obligations on time treat the bond as a licensing formality. We issue it at a flat 3% with no credit check.

Business Regulation §4-306 (State Athletic Commission)Maryland promoters of boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and MMA must furnish a surety bond under Business Regulation Article §4-306. The State Athletic Commission requires a promoter’s expense bond ensuring participants’ event expenses are covered, with a minimum amount of $2,000. This is separate from the boxing and wrestling tax bond. Confirm your required amount with the Commission.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Maryland promoter's expense bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The expense bond minimum is $2,000, so a minimum bond lands at the $275 premium minimum. If the Commission sets a higher amount, enter it and the quote updates.
What does this bond guarantee? +
That participants in your event have their event expenses covered if you fail to pay them. It is required by the State Athletic Commission under Business Regulation §4-306 as a condition of your promoter license.
Is this the same as the boxing & wrestling tax bond? +
No — they are two different bonds. The expense bond backs participants’ event expenses; the tax bond backs the State’s athletic tax. Many promoters need both, so we issue them separately.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the expense bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
Where do I file it? +
With your Maryland State Athletic Commission promoter license, in the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. We issue the executed bond ready to submit.
