About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Louisville licenses wrecking (demolition) contractors and conditions a Class "A" wrecking permit on a $10,000 surety bond. The "A" class covers standard demolition work, with the larger "B" class carrying a $25,000 bond.

The bond is a public-safety-and-compliance guarantee: it stands behind your obligation to demolish to code, protect adjacent property and the public, and clean up the site. The City of Louisville is the obligee, with the public as the protected parties.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the wrecking permit, so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days before expiration.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Louisville wrecking "A" permit bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every demolition contractor. The $10,000 is set by the city, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What is the difference between the "A" and "B" wrecking bonds? +
The City of Louisville issues two wrecking permit classes. This Class "A" permit carries a $10,000 bond; the Class "B" permit carries a $25,000 bond, for larger demolition work. Check which class your permit requires.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount permit bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the wrecking permit. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out so your permit never lapses over a missed email.
